My report on specialized anti-piracy courts in Somalia and other States in the region (S/2012/50), submitted pursuant to Security Council resolution 2015 (2011) of 24 October 2011, presented an assessment of the type of international assistance that would be required for specialized anti-piracy courts to conduct cases in accordance with international standards and for States to detain suspects and imprison convicted pirates.

With a view to increasing the rate of prosecution for these illegal activities, my two most recent reports (S/2011/360 and S/2012/50) explored the modalities for the establishment of specialized anti-piracy courts in the region.

The present report is submitted pursuant to paragraph 16 of Security Council resolution 2015 (2011) of 24 October 2011, in which the Council decided to continue its consideration, as a matter of urgency, of the establishment of specialized anti-piracy courts in Somalia and other States in the region with substantial international participation and/or support.
