Ms. Stamatopoulou thanked a number of organizations, funds, agencies and Governments that had funded the participation of indigenous experts in the workshop, namely IFAD, UNESCO and WIPO, as well as the Governments of Canada, New Zealand and Norway.

Ms. Stamatopoulou (Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights), responding to questions posed by the representatives of China and Cuba at the 48th meeting with respect to awards of human rights prizes, said that the award of such prizes had been approved by the General Assembly in a resolution of 1966 and that prizes had been awarded in 1968, 1973, 1978, 1988 and 1993.

Ms. Stamatopoulou (Deputy Director of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights) said that one of the objectives of the Millennium Assembly had been to support universal ratification of the core human rights treaties, and that, during the course of those three days, 273 countries had signed, ratified or acceded to those instruments, an unprecedented number.

Ms. Stamatopoulou (Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights), in response to the questions put by the representative of Austria, said that systematic advocacy programmes in the area of children's rights in armed conflict were essential and that the Human Security Network would be a useful vehicle to promote such programmes.
