As requested by decision XX/7 of the Twentieth Meeting of the Parties, a workshop on the management and destruction of ozone-depleting substance banks and the implications for climate change was held on 13 July 2009 in Geneva.

I. Technical issues Following an overview of related challenges by the Executive Secretary of the Ozone Secretariat and an introduction of the agenda by the co-chairs of the workshop, representatives of the Technology and Economic Assessment Panel gave a presentation on ozone-depleting substance banks, which contained extensive and useful information on those banks.

With regard to submission of data called for by decision XXIII/11, one party reported data on ozonedepleting substance banks on its ships for 2009 amounting to 242 tonnes of HCFCs.

As regards ozone-depleting substance banks in Parties operating under paragraph 1 of Article 5, an expert report prepared for the Multilateral Fund for the Implementation of the Montreal Protocol in 2006 (UNEP.OzL.Pro/ExCom/48/42) estimated that in 2010 reachable banks of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) would be on the order of 515,000 tonnes.
