The Chairman drew attention to the fact that CPC had considered the revision to the System-wide Plan of Action for African Economic Recovery and Development during the second part of its thirty-fourth session. 1/ She pointed out that, as part of United Nations efforts to address the situation, CPC and ACC had held separate discussions on Africa.

During the discussion, concerns were expressed that CPC needed to consider how to apply its mandate, as set out in Economic and Social Council resolution 2008 (LX) of 14 May 1976, more effectively and efficiently in view of contemporary requirements and taking into account the relevant rules and regulations.

Noting that CPC had considered the Note by the Secretary-General (A/51/6 (Note)) to be consistent with the format it had recommended for outlining the broad areas of priority for the period of the medium-term plan, he said that his delegation endorsed the proposal that the Note should be considered for inclusion in the first part of the proposed medium-term plan for the period 1998-2001.

Mr. Ren Yisheng (Chairman of the Committee for Programme and Coordination) said, in reply to the comment by the representative of the United States that CPC could address the shortcomings raised by OIOS and make recommendations to correct them, that CPC had in fact taken the OIOS evaluation reports under consideration.
