Believing that the African Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone will protect African States against possible nuclear attacks on their territories,

In that regard, we call for the ratification of the African Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone Treaty -- the Treaty of Pelindaba -- by the required number of States so that it can enter into force without further delay.

As a nuclear-weapon State, India conveys its unambiguous assurance that it will respect the status of the African Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone.

My delegation would oppose the dismembering of Africa and the territory of the States members of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) into parts, some of which would be in the African Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone while others would not.

These demand a reasonable energy mix, including the exploration of nuclear power, as part of the benefits Nigeria can derive from the Agency, while being fully conscious of our unequivocal commitment to the spirit and letter of the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and the Treaty of Pelindaba on the African Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone.

In that context, I call for renewed efforts to ensure the earliest entry into force of the African Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone Treaty (Pelindaba Treaty).

Israel believes that the African Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone was established in accordance with those essential principles, and we support the strengthening of such nuclear-weapon-free zones.
وتعتقد إسرائيل أنه قد تم إنشاء المنطقة الخالية من الأسلحة النووية في أفريقيا وفقا لتلك المبادئ الأساسية، ونحن نؤيد تعزيز هذه المناطق الخالية من الأسلحة النووية.

In that connection, the African Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone Treaty remains a fundamental legal basis for creating a zone of peace and cooperation on the continent, and it serves as an effective confidence-building measure for nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament efforts in general.

The decision of the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya, announced on 19 December 2003, to eliminate materials, equipment and programmes for the production of weapons of mass destruction had greatly helped to create conditions in which Africa could achieve its vision of a continent free of weapons of mass destruction, in line with the objectives of the African Union and the African Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone Treaty (Pelindaba Treaty).
وأعلن أن قرار الجماهيرية العربية الليبية الذي أعلنته في 19 كانون الأول/ديسمبر 2003 بإزالة المواد والمعدات والبرامج التي تستخدم في إنتاج أسلحة الدمار الشامل قد ساعد كثيراً في خلق ظروف تسمح لأفريقيا بأن تحقق طموحها إلي قارة خالية من أسلحة الدمار الشامل، تمشيا مع أهداف الاتحاد الأفريقي، ومع المعاهدة الأفريقية للمناطق الخالية من الأسلحة النووية (معاهدة بليندابا).

Since then, progress has been made on establishing a nuclear-weapon-free zone in Africa following the successful conclusion of the 1996 signing ceremony in Egypt of the African Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone Treaty.

وينبغي أن يحث توقيع معاهدة اعتبار أفريقيا منطقة خالية من اﻷسلحة النووية الدول اﻷخرى، والدول الحائزة على اﻷسلحة النووية قبل كل شيء، على زيادة تكثيف تعاونها بشأن إعداد وتوقيع اتفاقيات جديدة في ما يتعلق بهذه المشكلة، وبصفة خاصة معاهدة للحظر الشامل للتجارب واتفاقية بشأن منع إنتاج المواد اﻹنشطارية لﻷغراض العسكرية.

The contribution toward the non-proliferation regime is being made regionally through the African Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone.

We therefore call upon the other members of the international community, especially the nuclear-weapon States, to join us in adopting the Pelindaba text of the African Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone Treaty.
