2. The package of agreements signed by the Government of Guatemala and URNG in December 1996 included detailed commitments on political, legislative, social, economic, agrarian, ethnic, military and public security issues, which were consolidated into a comprehensive peace agenda.

Based on the above considerations, on the strong support of the Government of Guatemala and URNG for the renewal of the mandate of MINUGUA and on similar support expressed by broad sectors of Guatemalan society, I recommend that the General Assembly authorize the renewal of the mandate of MINUGUA for a further period of six months.
١٠ - واستنادا الى الاعتبارات المذكورة آنفا، والى التأييد القوي من جانب حكومة غواتيمالا والاتحاد الثوري الوطني الغواتيمالي لتجديد ولاية البعثة، والى التأييد المماثل الذي أعربت عنه قطاعات عريضة من المجتمع الغواتيمالي، أوصي بأن تأذن الجمعية العامة بتجديد ولاية بعثة التحقق من حالة حقوق اﻹنسان ومن الامتثال للالتزامات الواردة في الاتفاق الشامل بشأن حقوق اﻹنسان في غواتيمالا لفترة ستة أشهر أخرى.

Through MINUGUA, it has continued to verify the implementation of the comprehensive peace agreements undertaken by the Government of Guatemala and URNG in December 1996, and to provide good offices and advisory services.

16. As mentioned above, the Government of Guatemala and URNG have stressed in the Implementation, Compliance and Verification Timetable for the Peace Agreements that international verification is essential for providing greater certainty to the implementation process and they have requested that the duration of the Mission’s mandate should be the same as that spanned by the timetable, namely, four years, from 1997 to the end of 2000.
