Under article 5 of the Convention, States parties are under an obligation to eliminate customary practices based on the idea of the inferiority or the superiority of either of the sexes.

The MSAR Government, through its several departments, has been adopting concrete measures aiming at changing men and women's socio-cultural behaviour schemes and models and at suppressing the prejudices and practices based on the idea of the inferiority or the superiority of either of the genders or on stereotyped roles for men and women.

This includes the obligation to modify " the social and cultural patterns of conduct of men and women, with a view to achieving the elimination of prejudices and customary and all other practices which are based on the idea of the inferiority or the superiority of either of the sexes or on stereotyped roles for men and women " (article 5).

24. International human rights law also requires States to take measures to eliminate harmful cultural and traditional practices and all other practices that are based on the idea of the inferiority or the superiority of either sex, or on stereotyped roles for women and men.
24- ويقتضي القانون الدولي لحقوق الإنسان من الدول أن تتخذ أيضاً تدابير للقضاء على الممارسات الثقافية والتقليدية الضارة وجميع الممارسات الأخرى القائمة على فكرة دونية أو تفوق أحد الجنسين، أو على أدوار نمطية للنساء والرجال.

85. Turkmenistan is taking all appropriate measures to modify the social and cultural patterns of conduct of men and women, with a view to achieving the elimination of prejudices and customary and all other practices which are based on the idea of the inferiority or the superiority of either of the sexes or on stereotyped roles for men and women.
85- تتخذ تركمانستان جميع التدابير المناسبة لتعديل الأنماط الاجتماعية والثقافية لسلوك الرجل والمرأة لتحقيق القضاء على التحيزات والعادات العرفية وكل الممارسات الأخرى القائمة على فكرة دونية أو تفوق أحد الجنسين أو على أدوار نمطية للرجل والمرأة.

Article 5a of CEDAW provides that States that are party to this Convention, " shall take all appropriate measures " to modify the social and cultural patterns of conduct of men and women, with a view to achieving " the elimination of prejudices and customary and all other practices which are based on the idea of the inferiority or the superiority of either of the sexes or on stereotyped roles for men and women " .
وتنص هذه المادة على أن تتخذ الدول الأطراف في هذه الاتفاقية " جميع التدابير المناسبة " لتعديل الأنماط الاجتماعية والثقافية لسلوك الرجل والمرأة بهدف تحقيق " القضاء على التحيزات والعادات العرفية وكل الممارسات الأخرى القائمة على فكرة دونية أو تفوق أحد الجنسين، أو على أدوار نمطية للرجل والمرأة " .

States Parties shall take all appropriate measures: (a) To modify the social and cultural patterns of conduct of men and women, with a view to achieving the elimination of prejudices and customary and all other practices which are based on the idea of the inferiority or the superiority of either of the sexes or on stereotyped roles for men and women;

" (b) Take all appropriate measures to eliminate prejudices that are based on the idea of the inferiority or the superiority of either of the sexes or on stereotyped roles for men and women and that constitute a barrier to women's access to and participation in the political sphere, and to adopt inclusive approaches to their political participation;
" (ب) اتخاذ جميع التدابير المناسبة للقضاء على ضروب التحامل القائمة على فكرة دونية أو تفوق جنس من الجنسين على الآخر أو على الأدوار النمطية للرجل والمرأة، لما يشكله هذا التحامل من حاجز يحول دون دخول المرأة ميدان العمل السياسي ومشاركتها فيه، وتبني نُهُج غير إقصائية نحو تحقيق المشاركة السياسية للمرأة؛
