In my capacity as Acting Chairman of the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People, I wish to express the Committee's deep concern at Israel's decision to build a new Jewish settlement in the Jabal Abu Ghneim area, south of East Jerusalem.

I would like to reiterate that the Turkish Government is most seriously concerned about the latest decision of the Israeli Government to approve a housing project in the Jabal Abu Ghneim area of Al-Quds Al-Sharif, in defiance of the relevant Security Council and General Assembly resolutions.

Following my letter to you of 17 March 1997, I wish to inform you that Israel, the occupying Power, has today, 18 March, begun the actual work for construction of a new settlement in the Jabal Abu Ghneim area to the south of occupied East Jerusalem.

34. At the request of Egypt, the Council met on 5 March 1997 to consider the situation in the occupied Arab territories, in particular the 26 February decision of the Israeli Government to begin construction of new Jewish housing in the Jabal Abu Ghneim area south of occupied East Jerusalem.

Letter dated 19 March (S/1997/235) from the representative of Qatar addressed to the President of the Security Council, requesting, on behalf of LAS, that an immediate meeting of the Security Council be convened to consider the commencement by Israel of the construction of a new settlement in the Jabal Abu Ghneim area to the south of East Jerusalem as well as Israeli settlement activities in general in the rest of the occupied territories.
