She stressed the necessity of including the crime of aggression in the court’s jurisdiction, and expressed the hope that the members of the Preparatory Committee would reach an agreement on the definition of that crime, bearing in mind, in particular, that the deliberations of delegations were based on legal instruments adopted at the international level.

The Temporary Chairman said that the candidacy of Mr. Carlos Dos Santos, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Mozambique, had been endorsed by the Group of African States, noted with satisfaction by the Coordination Bureau of the Non-Aligned Countries and favourably received by the members of the Preparatory Committee in informal consultations.

To invite the Secretary-General of the United Nations to nominate, in consultation with the members of the Preparatory Committee, an official to act as provisional Secretary-General of the 1995 Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, a nomination which would later be confirmed by the Conference itself.

I would like to begin my remarks by expressing appreciation to the members of the Preparatory Committee, the various negotiating groups and the very long-serving and excellent members of the Bureau: Ambassador Durrant, Ambassador Schumacher, Ambassador Anwarul Chowdhury, Ambassador Iftekhar Chowdhury, Ambassador Topic and Ambassador Tall.
