14. In this connection, it is noteworthy to recall that the report of the independent expert for the United Nations study on violence against children, Paulo Sérgio Pinheiro (A/61/299), was submitted to the General Assembly at its sixty-first session.

63. In the context of the follow-up to the report of the independent expert for the United Nations study on violence against children (A/61/299), OHCHR has strengthened its efforts to encourage treaty bodies and special procedures to work on child rights issues, including juvenile justice issues.

In the report of the independent expert for the United Nations study on violence against children (A/61/299), attention was drawn to the unacceptable levels of violence affecting children in all areas of life, in particular in schools, in their families and within institutions, including criminal justice institutions.

5. Since the release of the report of the independent expert for the United Nations study on violence against children on the rights of the child in 2006, the need to prioritize the protection of children from violence had been increasingly recognized at the international, regional and national levels.
