To commemorate the twentieth anniversary of the signing of those Treaties and to prepare itself well for its new responsibilities, the Government of Panama has taken the initiative of organizing the Universal Congress on the Panama Canal, to be held in Panama City in September 1997. This Congress will be along the same lines as the 1879 Congress of the Geographical Society of Paris, chaired by Ferdinand de Lesseps.
