6. The Chairman pointed out that the main task before the session was to consider and finalize the Provisional Scientific and Technical Guidelines of the Commission, which are aimed at assisting coastal States in preparing submissions regarding the outer limits of their continental shelves.
٦ - وأشار الرئيس إلى أن المهمة اﻷساسية للدورة هي دراسة ووضع صيغة نهائية لمشروع المبادئ التوجيهية العلمية والتقنية للجنة التي ترمي إلى مساعدة الدول الساحلية في إعداد مطالباتها بشأن الحدود الخارجية لجروفها القارية.

At its fifth session the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf decided that at its next (sixth) session it would, inter alia, examine the technical facilities of the Secretariat and its logistical preparedness for receiving submissions of coastal States regarding the outer limits of their continental shelves (CLCS/12, para. 21).

Turning to the law of the sea, we note the current efforts of coastal States, including Canada, to delineate their continental shelves.

It is obligatory, under the Convention, for States to respect, among other things, the sovereignty of other States, their sovereign rights and jurisdiction over their continental shelves and their exclusive economic zones as provided for in the relevant articles of the Convention.
