I would like to pay tribute today to two women leaders of the United Nations system, who have also been friends and close colleagues of mine: Ms. Nafis Sadik of Pakistan, Secretary-General of the Cairo Conference and a long-serving and effective leader of the United Nations Population Fund, and Ms. Thoraya Obaid of Saudi Arabia, Ms. Sadik's dynamic and dedicated successor.
وأود أن أشيد اليوم بامرأتين رائدتين في منظومة الأمم المتحدة، وهما أيضا صديقتان وزميلتان مقربتان لي، السيدة نفيس صادق من باكستان، الأمينة العامة لمؤتمر القاهرة والرائدة ذات الخدمة الطويلة والفعالة في صندوق الأمم المتحدة للسكان، والسيدة ثريا عبيد من المملكة العربية السعودية، الخليفة الدينامية والمتفانية للسيدة صادق.

Before we proceed, I should like to remind members that, in a letter dated 6 October 2009 addressed to all Permanent Representatives and Observers, I indicated my intention to invite Ms. Thoraya Obaid, Executive Director of the United Nations Population Fund, to make a statement this morning following the intervention by the Secretary-General. May I take it that it is the wish of the General Assembly to invite Ms. Obaid to make such a statement?
وقبل أن نواصل العمل، أود أن أذكّر الأعضاء بأنني وجهت رسالة مؤرخة 6 تشرين الأول/أكتوبر 2009 إلى جميع الممثلين الدائمين والمراقبين الدائمين لإبلاغهم باعتزامي دعوة السيدة ثريا عبيد، المدير التنفيذي لصندوق الأمم المتحدة للسكان، للإدلاء ببيان صباح هذا اليوم عقب بيان الأمين العام؛ فهل لي أن أعتبر أن الجمعية العامة ترغب في دعوة السيدة ثريا عبيد للإدلاء ببيان هذا الصباح؟
