87. OIC also understood that the freedom to adopt a religion or belief of one's choice and the freedom to manifest religion were applicable to both the individual and the religious community to which the individual belonged.

The basis for allowing such a claim after a person has joined the armed forces is the language of article 18 of the Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which provides that an individual has the freedom " to have or to adopt a religion or belief of his choice " .
