This report seeks to identify approaches for the effective promotion and use of science and technology to meet the development goals contained in the Millennium Declaration (MDGs).

The report of the Secretary-General on promoting the application of science and technology to meet the development goals contained in the Millennium Declaration (E/CN.16/2004/2) encourages national Governments to review and analyse their science, technology and innovation policies to ensure that they serve the needs of development effectively.

At its 51st meeting, on 23 July, the Council adopted an oral draft decision whereby it deferred consideration of the draft resolution recommended by the Commission, entitled " Promoting the application of science and technology to meet the development goals contained in the United Nations Millennium Declaration " 5 to a resumed session.
