On 10 May 2012, UNASUR launched the South American Register of Defence Expenditures, which is a regional complement to the United Nations Report on Military Expenditures.

4. Since 1981, Member States have been providing information on their military spending through what is now called the United Nations Report on Military Expenditures.

5. Furthermore, the Secretary-General made a reference to the United Nations Standardized Instrument for Reporting Military Expenditures (now the United Nations Report on Military Expenditures), in relation to confidence-building measures in the field of conventional arms (see A/66/176).
