Data-collection and research efforts were also under way to identify, protect and manage VMEs.

In particular, States parties shall require their nationals or vessels flying their flag to report to them any activity directed at underwater cultural heritage located in the Area and shall notify the Secretary-General of the International Seabed Authority of such discovery or activity.

Regarding encounters with VMEs, participants agreed to require that vessels flying their flag would cease bottom fishing activities within five nautical miles of any site in the area where, in the course of fishing operations, evidence of VMEs was encountered, and report the encounter to the interim secretariat so that appropriate measures could be adopted in respect of the relevant site.
