The Committee also regrets that the State party has not paid sufficient attention to the large-scale economic exploitation of talibés from neighbouring countries, most of them subjected to violence and ill-treatment by marabouts, despite the 2006 recommendations of the Committee on the Rights of the Child (CRC/SEN/CO/2, paras. 60 and 61) in that regard.

40. This report presents, by way of illustration, sentences handed down which show that the Tunisian authorities do not hesitate to prosecute abuse of authority by law enforcement officials, in particular acts of violence and ill-treatment of which they are guilty, and to impose severe penalties where guilt is established:

11.1 On 25 October 2007, the State party presented copies of judgements that provide irrefutable proof that the Tunisian judicial authorities do not hesitate to prosecute cases of abuse of power by law enforcement agents, particularly acts of violence and ill-treatment, and to impose severe penalties if they are found guilty.

JS1 stated that although instances of violence and ill-treatment in detention and open centres were reduced over the last five years, there were still occasional incidents where excessive force was used, at times with tragic results and mostly during protests or an attempt to escape from detention, when force was used to assert control over detainees.
