General recommendation No. 19 of the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women states that gender-based violence against women is violence that is directed against a woman because she is a woman or that affects women disproportionately, and includes acts that inflict physical, mental or sexual harm or suffering, threats of such acts, coercion and other deprivations of liberty.
إذ تنص التوصية العامة رقم 19 للجنة المعنية بالقضاء على التمييز ضد المرأة على أن العنف القائم على نوع الجنس ضد المرأة هو العنف الموجه ضد المرأة لأنها امرأة والذي يؤثر على المرأة بشكل غير متناسب، ويشمل الأفعال التي تتسبب في الضرر البدني أو النفسي أو الجنسي أو المعاناة البدنية أو النفسية أو الجنسية، أو التهديد بهذه الأفعال، والقسر والأشكال الأخرى للحرمان من الحرية.

It recalls that in its General Recommendation No. 19 on violence against women, the Committee states that the definition of discrimination against women in article 1 of the Convention includes gender-based violence, i.e. violence that is directed against a woman because she is a woman or that affects women disproportionately.
