In cooperation with the United Nations Special Procedures, the Special Rapporteur on Violence Against Women, its Causes and Consequences, Ms. Yakin Erturk, undertook a mission to Ghana from 7 to 14 July, 2007 and enjoyed the invaluable support and cooperation of the competent Ghanaian authorities and civil society organizations.

She noted with satisfaction the appointment of Mrs. Mary Robinson as United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, the first woman to hold the post, and of Ms. Yakin Erturk as Director of the International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women (INSTRAW), which she viewed as a practical response to the call to have more women in decision-making positions within the United Nations system, a trend which must continue.
