Since 1991, the General Assembly has adopted a series of resolutions pertaining to enhancing the effectiveness of the principle of periodic and genuine elections.7 At the same time, the General Assembly has reaffirmed respect for the principles of national sovereignty and non-interference in the internal affairs of States in their electoral processes in another series of resolutions.8 These mandates have broadened over the last few years.
٣٦ - اعتمدت الجمعية العامة، منذ عام ١٩٩١، مجموعة من القرارات تتعلق بتعزيز فعالية مبدأ إجراء انتخابات دورية نزيهة)٧(. وفي الوقت ذاته، أكدت الجمعية العامة من جديد احترام مبادئ السيادة الوطنية وعدم التدخل في الشؤون الداخلية للدول في عملياتها الانتخابية في مجموعة أخرى من القرارات)٨(.

Regarding the need to update the guidelines to Member States seeking electoral assistance, a note of guidance was circulated to all UNDP field offices and included in the report of the Secretary-General on enhancing the effectiveness of the principle of periodic and genuine elections (A/56/344).
