During the World Summit on Sustainable Development held in Johannesburg, South Africa, in August 2002, Member States adopted the Johannesburg Declaration on Sustainable Development.

1. The United Nations General Assembly, in its resolution 57/253 of 20 December 2002, endorsed the Johannesburg Declaration on Sustainable Development and the Plan of Implementation of the World Summit on Sustainable Development.

That limitation was recognized at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in 1992 (the Earth Summit) and was embodied in the Rio Principles. Subsequently the international community reconfirmed that challenge and, in the Johannesburg Declaration on Sustainable Development, stated:
