It was against that background that Sri Lanka decided, together with 27 other members of the Conference on Disarmament belonging to the Group of 21, to call for a programme of action for the elimination of nuclear weapons.

As you will remember, last year 28 delegations from member States of the Conference on Disarmament belonging to the Group of 21 presented a proposal for a programme of action for the elimination of nuclear weapons, and the United Nations General Assembly, in its resolution 51/45 O, when calling upon this Conference to establish an ad hoc committee on nuclear disarmament, urged it to take the programme of action into account.
وكما تذكرون فإن ٨٢ وفداً من الدول اﻷعضاء في مؤتمر نزع السلاح تنتمي إلى مجموعة اﻟ١٢ كانت قد تقدمت في العام الماضي باقتراح لبرنامج عمل ﻹزالة اﻷسلحة النووية، وأن الجمعية العامة لﻷمم المتحدة قد طلبت إلى هذا المؤتمر، في قرارها ١٥/٥٤ سين، أن ينشئ لجنة مخصصة لنزع السلاح النووي فحثت المؤتمر على أن يضع في اعتباره برنامج العمل.
