Once again, we welcome the Secretary-General's initiative to dispatch, in June 2003, at the request of the Security Council, a multidisciplinary assessment mission to Central Africa to determine how best to ensure a comprehensive, resolute and coordinated approach to problems relating to peace, security and development in the subregion.

The basis of the Council's deliberations was the report of an assessment mission dispatched by the Secretary-General to Central Africa from 8 to 22 June 2003 (S/2003/1077).

9. The sixth mission of the Security Council to Central Africa took place at a time when the peace process in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has entered a new phase and the recent completion of the transition in Burundi has unveiled a variety of challenges to the consolidation of peace.
