On 29 June, the President of the Security Council issued a presidential statement (S/PRST/2005/27) calling on all Congolese parties to respect the decision of Parliament to extend for a period of six months the transitional period that was to expire on 30 June 2005.

At a summit meeting of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region on 14 and 15 December 2011 in Kampala, a statement jointly issued by Burundi, the Central African Republic, Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania and Zambia called on all Congolese parties to accept the results and to focus on the next phase of reconstruction.

Last year the Security Council established an important precedent for such an approach in its resolution on the Democratic Republic of the Congo (1468 (2003)), in which it called upon the Congolese parties to take into account the commitment and record of individuals with regard to respect for international humanitarian law and human rights when selecting individuals for key posts in the transitional government.
وقد أنشأ مجلس الأمن في السنة الماضية سابقة هامة مهدت لهذا النهج في قراره بشأن جمهورية الكونغو الديمقراطية (1468 (2003)) الذي دعا فيه الأطراف الكونغولية إلى مراعاة التزام الأفراد باحترام القانون الإنساني الدولي وحقوق الإنسان وسجلهم في هذا المجال لدى اختيارهم لشغل المناصب الرئيسية في الحكومة الانتقالية.
