The clean development mechanism has played a crucial role in supporting the contribution of Annex I Parties that are also parties to the Kyoto Protocol towards mitigation efforts and has also contributed to the achievement of the sustainable development goals of developing countries that host clean development mechanism projects.

21. Background: The CMP, by decision 22/CMP.1, requested the secretariat to prepare a compilation and synthesis of the national communications of all Annex I Parties that are also Parties to the Kyoto Protocol, in accordance with the relevant decisions of the COP and the CMP.

The SBI urged Annex I Parties that are also Parties to the Kyoto Protocol to enhance further the completeness, comparability and level of detail of the reported information in accordance with the " Guidelines for the preparation of the information required under Article 7 of the Kyoto Protocol " .

89. As of 30 April 2012, the secretariat had coordinated all 39 in-depth reviews of the fifth national communications received from the Annex I Parties that are also Parties to the Kyoto Protocol, in accordance with the guidelines for review under Article 8 of the Kyoto Protocol.

In order to meet the commitments under Articles 4.1, 4.3, 4.4, 4.5, 4.8 and 4.9, Parties included in Annex II to the Convention and other Annex I Parties that are in a position to do so should provide funding for developing country Parties, through the following channels:
