B. Topic 8: Discriminatory treatment of Roma children

Roma ghettos existed in some States and certain schools were reserved exclusively for Roma pupils as a result; in some cases, Roma children did not receive formal schooling at all.

In the four year project period, 1196 Roma children will be covered and 19 Roma kindergarten teachers will be recruited to work in kindergartens where the project is implemented.

64. The Committee urges the State party to take effective measures to promote school attendance by Roma children and children belonging to other minority groups, as well as refugee and internally displaced children, by increasing subsidies, scholarships and the number of teachers instructing in minority languages.
64- وتحث اللجنة الدولة الطرف على اتخاذ تدابير فعالة لتشجيع الأطفال الروما والأطفال المنتمين إلى الأقليات الأخرى والأطفال اللاجئين والمشردين داخليا على الالتحاق بالمدارس، وذلك بزيادة الإعانات والمنح وعدد مدرسي لغات الأقليات.

The Committee is also concerned about the placement of Roma children in special schools or classes and the high drop-out rates of Roma children from primary education, as well as low school attendance (arts. 13 and 14).
