Some progress has been made on the fundamental issue of the future political status of Abkhazia within the State of Georgia, as a result of the sustained efforts of the Secretary-General and his Special Representative, with the assistance of the Russian Federation, in its capacity as facilitator, as well as of the group of Friends of the Secretary-General and of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe.

My delegation therefore wishes to encourage all Member States to deploy their best efforts in assessing and addressing national road safety problems, drawing upon the recommendations of reports of the Secretary-General and of the WHO as basic guidelines.

Mrs. Naz (Bangladesh): It is a great pleasure for my delegation to initiate the discussion under agenda item 44, " Culture of peace " . We thank the Secretary-General and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) for the useful report (A/58/182) on the International Decade for a Culture of Peace and Non-Violence for the Children of the World, 2001-2010.
