The International Strategy for Disaster Reduction secretariat supported the UNOSAT programme and recognized the importance of directing attention to users' needs and requirements and facilitating the wider use of satellite applications in contexts ranging from prevention to response, including such areas as education, conflict resolution and poverty eradication.

In addition, there was close coordination with the Economic Commission for Africa, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the regional offices of the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs of the Secretariat and the secretariat of the International Strategy for Disaster Reduction.

7. The representative of the secretariat of the International Strategy for Disaster Reduction of the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs reported on the increasing focus of the international community on reducing risk and vulnerability in both the humanitarian and development areas.

UN-SPIDER participated in the Sino-African High Level Seminar on Drought Risk Reduction, held in Beijing from 25 to 27 September 2011, which was organized by the International Strategy for Disaster Reduction and the Ministry of Civil Affairs of China.
20- وشارك برنامج سبايدر في الحلقة الدراسية الصينية الأفريقية الرفيعة المستوى بشأن الحدّ من مخاطر الجفاف، التي عُقدت في بيجين، في الفترة من 25 إلى 27 أيلول/سبتمبر 2011، والتي قامت بتنظيمها الاستراتيجية الدولية للحدّ من الكوارث ووزارة الشؤون المدنية في الصين.

The secretariat of the International Strategy for Disaster Reduction, which provides secretariat services to the Inter-Agency Task Force on Disaster Reduction, supported the efforts to introduce the use of space technologies, such as Earth observation and communications satellites in disaster reduction.

It also invited the International Strategy for Disaster Reduction to present a progress report on the status of implementation by small island developing States of the Hyogo Framework for Action and organized, in May 2007, an event on climate change, small island developing States and least developed countries, which featured a presentation by the Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

22. Mr. Holmes (Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator), introducing the report of the Secretary-General on the implementation of the International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (A/62/320), said that more people were threatened by natural hazards and extreme weather than at any other time in history, as exemplified by the massive floods across Asia and much of Africa in summer 2007.
