9. Mr. SHEARER noted that the Committee had begun to examine communications under the Optional Protocol in 1979 and during the first 10 years had had no formal method for investigating follow-up by States parties to its views.

In 2012 the Committee had asked the General Assembly for additional temporary resources in order to deal with communications under the Optional Protocol (A/67/40, vol. I, annex VI, p. 238), but its request had been refused.
