The challenges posed by the use of freelance interpreters are elsewhere: availability at short notice (especially in some language combinations), fierce global competition for these scarce resources and the fact that the conditions of their temporary employment at the United Nations are not as competitive as the conditions offered by other institutions employing freelancers.
