The purpose of this is to enable women to prove their divorce, essential if they want to apply for maintenance or remarry.

169. After extensive discussion, the Board agreed, by consensus, to recommend to the General Assembly the removal of the " remarriage penalty " for surviving spouses who had remarried before 1 April 1999.
