For many, humanity's biggest achievement was the outlawing of war by the Charter of the United Nations. Conversely, therefore, humanity's biggest failure is the persistence of war and occupation in places like Iraq and Palestine.

As at October 2013, an estimated 6.5 million internally displaced people, including approximately 3 million children, as well as hosting communities and refugees from Iraq and Palestine, were in need of humanitarian assistance.
