UNIFEM focuses on three areas: strengthening women's economic capacity as entrepreneurs and producers; engendering governance and leadership that will increase women's participation in the decision-making processes that shape their lives; and promoting women's human rights so as to eliminate all forms of violence against women.

22. At its fifty-fourth session, the Commission adopted resolution 1998/17 on violence against women migrant workers, in which it reiterated part of the text of resolution 42/3 of the Commission on the Status of Women.

It also commends the Government on the adoption, in April 1998, of a Plan of Action on violence against women with specific budgetary allocations for each of the areas covered by the Plan.

Her calls on the international community to put pressure on Governments to eradicate violence against women were very timely.

5. Invites concerned States parties, particularly of sending and receiving countries, to include in their periodic reports to relevant human rights treaty bodies, updated and comprehensive information on actions they have taken to address the problem of violence against women migrant workers;

9. In the area of women's human rights, the Commission undertook to prepare the Declaration on the Elimination of violence against Women, which placed the issue in a rights context, and undertook a review of its communications procedure with a view to making it more effective.

The thematic mechanisms cover a wide range of issues, including racism and racial discrimination, the protection of particularly vulnerable groups, such as children and internally displaced persons, the protection of certain fundamental rights, such as freedom of expression and belief, and particularly serious violations of physical integrity, such as violence against women, summary or arbitrary executions, enforced disappearances and torture.
