As of 1 March 2010, there were 161 parties to the Convention, 140 to the Part XI Agreement and 78 to the United Nations Fish Stocks Agreement.

Croatia declared that, for the settlement of disputes concerning the application or interpretation of the Convention and of the Agreement on Part XI of UNCLOS, it had chosen, in order of preference, the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea and the International Court of Justice.

The difference between the number of States parties to the Convention and the number of States parties to the Agreement is explained by the fact that 34 States which became parties to the Convention prior to the adoption of the Agreement on Part XI have not yet expressed their consent to be bound by the Agreement.

64. As indicated in last year's report, in 1996 Japan adopted eight sets of legislation for the implementation of UNCLOS and the 1994 Implementation Agreement relating to Part XI. Three texts of legislation have been submitted to the United Nations.
٦٤ - اعتمدت اليابان في ١٩٩٦، كما أوضح تقرير السنة الماضية، ثماني مجموعات من التشريع لتنفيذ اتفاقية اﻷمم المتحدة لقانون البحار واتفاق التنفيذ لعام ١٩٩٤ المتعلق بالجزء الحادي عشر.

Given the importance of the Convention for the management of the world's oceans, universal acceptance of this instrument is important. This includes universal adherence to the Agreement relating to the implementation of Part XI of the Convention.
ونظــرا ﻷهميــة هذه الاتفاقية في إدارة محيطات العالــم، فإن القبول العالمي لهذا الصك يتسم باﻷهمية وذلك يشمل الامتثال للاتفاق المتعلق بالجزء الحادي عشر من الاتفاقية وتنفيذه.
