It was stated that the work of the Programme on transnational corporations on foreign direct investment was useful in enabling a better assessment of the contributions of transnational corporations.

In introducing the item, the Director-in-charge of the UNCTAD Division on transnational corporations and Investment stated that the transfer of the Programme on transnational corporations to Geneva had encountered logistic problems and that re-establishment of the Programme in Geneva at its full capacity had not yet taken place.

In the past, the Programme on transnational corporations was carried out by the United Nations Centre on transnational corporations (1975-1992) and the Transnational Corporations and Management Division of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Development (1992-1993).
