278. Despite the fact that women have occupied the position of head of Government of Sri Lanka, the Committee is concerned that, on the whole there is a very low level of representation of women in politics and public life.

The Committee urges the State party to take all necessary measures to increase the representation of women in politics and public life at the local, provincial and national levels, including through the implementation of temporary special measures, in accordance with article 4, paragraph 1, of the Convention.
279 - وتحث اللجنة الدولة الطرف على اتخاذ جميع التدابير اللازمة لزيادة تمثيل المرأة في العمل السياسي والحياة العامة على المستويات المحلية والإقليمية والوطنية، وأن يجري ذلك من خلال وسائل منها تنفيذ تدابير خاصة مؤقتة، وفقا للفقرة 1 من المادة 4 من الاتفاقية.

She further stated that quotas had been used successfully in many countries. She expressed her hope that the creation of women's organizations and the greater involvement of women in politics could help the incorporation of their interests into the economics and politics of the transition.

In order to increase women's participation in national and local politics, the Federal Ministry of Women's Affairs and Youth Development had established the National Action Committee for women in politics, responsible for formulating strategies to achieve the effective mobilization of women, so that they might register, vote and be voted for in any electoral process, in keeping with the country's democratic system.

The world continued to make tremendous progress in combating extreme poverty and in areas such as primary school enrolment, disease prevention, drinking water and increasing women's political participation.
