The present note provides background information on some of the forest issues of international concern as well as policy responses through the Intergovernmental Panel on Forests and the Intergovernmental Forum on Forests (IPF/IFF) process.

(a) Take into account the seven thematic elements and the relevant Intergovernmental Panel on Forests and Intergovernmental Forum on Forests proposals for action in order to facilitate sustainable forest management;

Reaffirming the decisions of the United Nations Forum on Forests and the proposals for action identified by the Intergovernmental Panel on Forests and the Intergovernmental Forum on Forests, and welcoming ongoing efforts to implement such actions,

8. Decides also that the Proposals for Action adopted by the Intergovernmental Panel on Forests and the Intergovernmental Forum on Forests should be fully taken into account in the development of the actions referred to in paragraph 4 above;

II. General overview of the status of discussions on forest research of the Intergovernmental Panel on Forests and the Intergovernmental Forum on Forests

The Forum and its predecessors, the Intergovernmental Panel on Forests and the Intergovernmental Forum on Forests, have long considered forests and biodiversity conservation, including protected areas, among the key elements of sustainable forest management.

5. The Intergovernmental Panel on Forests and the Intergovernmental Forum on Forests recognized monitoring, assessment and reporting on forests as critical to countries for sound forest planning and policy development.

Its main objective is to promote the management, conservation and sustainable development of all types of forests and to strengthen long-term political commitment based on the Rio Declaration, the Forest Principles, chapter 11 of Agenda 21 and the outcome of the Intergovernmental Panel on Forests and Intergovernmental Forum on Forests, and other key milestones of international forest policy.
