The Joint Inspection Unit (JIU) in its report entitled " young professionals in selected organizations of the United Nations system: recruitment, management, and retention " (see A/55/798) identified spouse employment as perhaps the most critical of family support issues, as it has a direct impact on organizations' abilities to attract and retain highly qualified staff (see paras. 70-76).

With respect to junior professionals, the College worked closely with organizations, such as the Department of Economic and Social Affairs of the Secretariat and the World Food Programme, and with Member States, such as Italy and the Netherlands, to train young professionals in developing knowledge and skills related to United Nations organizations and working collaboratively within multicultural teams.

The Advisory Committee is of the view that the report of the Joint Inspection Unit on young professionals in selected organizations of the United Nations system: recruitment, management and retention (see A/55/798) is a valuable contribution to the debate on the best means of adopting a realistic personnel management and planning strategy for the rejuvenation of the Secretariat.

At the same session, the General Assembly requested the Secretary-General to submit a progress report on the question of young professionals in selected organizations of the United Nations system in the context of his report on human resources management to be submitted to the Assembly at its fifty-seventh session, taking into account the observations of the Advisory Committee on Administrative and Budgetary Questions thereon (decision 56/462).
