28. JS11 stated that gender-based violence, particularly sexual violence against women and girls, was serious and pervasive in Uganda.

27. JS7 stated that the protection of women and girls from discriminatory attitudes and practices such as female genital mutilation (FGM) and other forms of abuse, including rape, acts of betrothal and forced marriages was hampered by cultural and traditional practices.

In its previous concluding comments the Committee expressed its concern about the situation of displaced women and girls and their living conditions, including those in refugee camps and recommended that greater assistance to refugee and displaced women and girls be given, including rehabilitative efforts (A/56/38, Part I, paras. 52 and 53).

In addition to loss of home and high levels of insecurity, these women and girls have suffered and continue to suffer: loss of family members (88% of the surveyed ID populations are widowed) and associated trauma, disrupted social ties and high risks of malnutrition, deteriorating health and many got infected with HIV and now have to contend with a new disease.

CEDAW recommended continued efforts to address the impact of HIV/AIDS on women and girls, as well as its social and family consequences. It urged Tanzania to enhance its focus on women's empowerment and to include clearly and visibly a gender perspective in its policies and programmes on HIV/AIDS.
وأوصت لجنة مناهضة التمييز ضد المرأة بمواصلة الجهود المبذولة في سبيل التخفيف من وقع عدوى فيروس نقص المناعة البشري/الإيدز على النسوة والفتيات فضلاً عن الآثار المترتبة على هذه العدوى في المجتمع وفي الأسرة وحثت تنزانيا على تعزيز تركيزها على تمكين المرأة وأن تضمن سياساتها وبرامجها المتعلقة بهذه العدوى بعداً جنسانياً واضحاً ومنظوراً(92).
