II. Background 5. Awareness of the importance of mountain ecosystems and communities has increased since the adoption of chapter 13 of Agenda 21, entitled " Managing fragile ecosystems: sustainable mountain development " , at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in 1992.

Consequently, the rehabilitation of degraded natural pastureland by cultivating plants which are suitable in terms of productivity, edibility and high fodder value is a key issue in stopping the ongoing degradation of such fragile ecosystems.
وتبعا لذلك تُعد عملية إعادة تأهيل المراعي الطبيعية المتدهورة عن طريق الاستزراع بالنباتات الرعوية المناسبة من حيث الإنتاجية والاستساغة والقيمة العلفية الجيدة من القضايا المهمة لوقف التدهور المستمر في مثل هذه النظم البيئية الهشة.

The UNU was asked by the secretariat of the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development to take the lead in writing the chapter in Agenda 21 on sustainable mountain development, 1/ which came under the broader topic of managing fragile ecosystems.
وقد طلبت أمانة مؤتمر اﻷمم المتحدة المعني بالبيئة والتنمية من جامعة اﻷمم المتحدة أن تقوم بدور قيادي في كتابة فصل في جدول أعمال القرن اﻟ ٢١ عن التنمية المستدامة للجبال)١(، ويرد ذلك الفصل تحت موضوع أكبر هو إدارة النظم البيئية الهشة.

Some Parties proposed measures that included the establishment of development funds and public awareness and training programmes, protection of and vigilance over protected areas, sustainable management of protected areas, sustainable management of fragile ecosystems and native forests, development of forestry - livestock and agroforestry systems, and provision of alternative livelihoods for communities protecting/conserving forests.
