Further consideration was given to new alternative approaches with a view to reaching early agreement to give new impetus to the process of strengthening cooperation and ensuring peace, security and stability in the Indian Ocean region.

However, France was interested in the work of the Ad Hoc Committee and the concept of a zone of peace and was prepared to examine the new alternative approaches.

22. At its 1994 session, the Committee had been able to identify some possible new alternative approaches, although no agreement had been reached on them.

32. The Ad Hoc Committee's work had been made easier in the current year by the responses received to the General Assembly's request, contained in resolution 48/82, that Member States submit to the Secretary-General their views on new alternative approaches.

15. At the same time, the General Assembly could not be expected to continue renewing the Committee's mandate to look at " new alternative approaches " , as though that label by itself constituted sufficient justification for the Committee's existence.

Australia accepted the terms of resolution 47/59 and proposed that the Committee should look at a number of issues which, taken together, would constitute the required new alternative approaches to regional cooperation and security in the Indian Ocean area, while maintaining full respect for the Declaration itself and for the work which the Committee had undertaken since the adoption of that instrument.

1. Australia welcomes the opportunity to submit its views on new alternative approaches to the implementation of the Declaration of the Indian Ocean as a Zone of Peace to the Secretary-General, in response to the invitation contained in General Assembly resolution 48/82 of 16 December 1993.
١ - ترحب استراليا بالفرصة المتاحة لها لكي تقدم الى اﻷمين العام آراءها بشأن النهج البديلة الجديدة لتنفيذ إعلان المحيط الهندي منطقة سلم، وذلك استجابة للدعوة الواردة في قرار الجمعية العامة ٤٨/٨٢ المؤرخ ١٦ كانون اﻷول/ديسمبر ١٩٩٣.

15. Mr. LI Zhaoxing (China) outlined China's views on new alternative approaches to the Indian Ocean question, which had been submitted in response to General Assembly resolution 48/82.

Mr. MOMEN (Bangladesh) said that the Committee had to continue its consideration of new alternative approaches on the basis of its deliberations in 1993 and 1994, with a view to reaching early agreement on how to give new impetus to the process of strengthening cooperation and ensuring peace, security and stability in the Indian Ocean region.
٢١ - السيد مؤمن )بنغلاديش(: قال إن اللجنة أمامها مهمة تتمثل في مواصلة النظر في النهج البديلة الجديدة على أساس المناقشات التي جرت في عامي ١٩٩٣ و ١٩٩٤، وذلك للتعجيل بالتوصل إلى اتفاق حول كيفية إعطاء دفعة جديدة لعملية تعزيز التعاون وكفالة السلم واﻷمن والاستقرار في منطقة المحيط الهندي.

The Assembly invited Member States to submit to the Secretary-General, by 31 May 1994, their views on new alternative approaches, including those discussed at the 1993 session of the Ad Hoc Committee, contained in its report to the General Assembly and requested the Secretary-General to submit, by 30 June 1994, a report based on replies received from Member States.
ودعت الجمعية العامة الدول اﻷعضاء الى أن تقدم الى اﻷمين العام بحلول ٣١ أيار/مايو ١٩٩٤ آراءها، بشأن النهج البديلة الجديدة بما في ذلك النهج التي نوقشت في دورة اللجنة المخصصة لعام ١٩٩٣، الواردة في تقرير اللجنة الى الجمعية العامة وطلبت الى اﻷمين العام أن يقدم بحلول ٣٠ حزيران/يونيه ١٩٩٤ تقريرا يستند الى الردود الواردة من الدول اﻷعضاء.

Mr. PEERTHUM (Mauritius) said that in the context of the new alternative approaches put forward at the previous session, the need to encourage measures for cooperation in economic, scientific, technical, environmental and humanitarian fields which could contribute to regional peace and security and, where appropriate, promote regional economic activities, had been stressed.
