1. Innovation and Technology Day is an open forum for technology pioneers, entrepreneurs, policymakers and experts and is designed to facilitate dialogue and action on key issues related to innovation, technology and development.

This initiative, the Innovation and Technology Day, constituted an open forum for technology pioneers, entrepreneurs, policymakers and experts that was designed to facilitate dialogue and action on key issues related to innovation, technology and development.

58. The Maastricht Economic Research Institute on Innovation and Technology of the United Nations University continued to contribute to the NEPAD African science, technology and innovation indicators initiative to develop Africa-relevant innovation survey tools and guidelines.

The audit was carried out through field visits to the UNU Institute for Environment and Human Security, in Germany; the UNU Maastricht Economic and Social Research Institute on Innovation and Technology, in the Netherlands; and the UNU International Institute for Global Health, in Malaysia, as well as a review of the financial transactions and operations at the UNU headquarters offices in Tokyo and Kuala Lumpur.

Through its Learning, Innovation and Knowledge Network, which is currently operating out of three subregional hubs in Eastern and West Africa, the Maastricht Economic Research Institute on Innovation and Technology of the United Nations University is exploring ways of mainstreaming the innovation systems approach within science and technology policymaking processes.

6. In his presentation, the Director of the Maastricht Economic and Social Research Institute on Innovation and Technology (Netherlands) argued that while there was controversy over the causes of the catching-up growth experience of South-East Asia, STI policies, knowledge and technology adoption from abroad, combined with domestic capacity-building, all played an important part in explaining the region's success.
