I should like briefly to recall the two high-level events that we have attended in the past few days: that on Africa's development needs and that on the Millennium Development Goals.

ASEAN calls upon all parties to implement fully the Political Declaration on Africa's development needs (resolution 63/1), adopted at the close of the high-level meeting held in September 2008.

While he welcomed the recent High-level Meeting on Africa's development needs and High-level Meeting devoted to the midterm review of the Almaty Programme of Action, much more needed to be done to assist the least developed countries, landlocked developing countries and small island developing States in reducing their vulnerability to the vicissitudes of markets and of nature.
ورغم أنه أعرب عن ترحيبه بالاجتماع الرفيع المستوى المعني بالاحتياجات الإنمائية لأفريقيا الذي عُقد مؤخرا والاجتماع الرفيع المستوى المخصص لاستعراض منتصف المدة لبرنامج عمل ألماتي، فقد ذكر أن هناك حاجة إلى القيام بما هو أكثر بكثير مما يجري القيام به حاليا لمساعدة أقل البلدان نموا والبلدان النامية غير الساحلية والدول الجزرية الصغيرة النامية على الحد من هشاشتها أيام تقلبات الأسواق والطبيعة.

54. Nevertheless, the African Group was encouraged by the international community's commitment to continue addressing Africa's development needs and commended the United Nations for providing the necessary leadership, as illustrated by the recent Highlevel Meeting on Africa's development needs and the 2008 High-level Event on the Millennium Development Goals.
