Mr. LIAN (Norway), speaking on behalf of the Nordic countries, said that peace-keeping activities constituted one of the most important means by which the United Nations contributed to conflict resolution and the promotion of peace; the Nordic countries advocated the continued strengthening of such functions.

The observer for Norway, speaking on behalf of the Nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden), stressed that representatives of United Nations bodies, specialized agencies and regional organizations should be invited to share their experiences on the promotion and protection of minorities with the Working Group.

Mr. ROTH (Sweden), speaking on behalf of the Nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden), welcomed the attention paid by the Working Group on international liability to the prevention of transboundary harm and the duty to pay compensation for harm caused.

Ms. Geelan (Denmark), introducing draft resolution A/C.3/53/L.23 on behalf of the Nordic countries and the other original sponsors, joined by Cyprus, Madagascar, Malta, the United States of America and Venezuela, said that the draft resolution was an important tool in combating torture, which was a matter of high priority.
