Bearing in mind that depleted uranium was used in Bosnia and Herzegovina during bombings in the mid-1990s, UNEP accepted a request by the local authorities to start an assessment in September 2002, studying the impacts of those bombings, making it the third phase of depleted uranium related work in the Balkans.

The Committee, while noting that the State party is closely monitoring the situation as indicated during the dialogue, nevertheless expresses concern about the detrimental health effects of the 15 sites contaminated with depleted uranium, which have led to substantial increases in the occurrence of cancer, particularly among children who continue to live at these sites.

The Post-Conflict Assessment Unit published its first report, on depleted uranium in Kosovo, in 2001, and in 2002 it published a second report, on depleted uranium in Serbia and Montenegro. A third study by UNEP on depleted uranium was conducted in Bosnia and Herzegovina in order to determine the environmental impact and potential health risks seven years after its use in conflict in 1994 and1995.
