1. Provide assessments of the state of scientific knowledge relating to climate change and its effects (Article 9.2 (a)). In this context:

At its twenty-fifth general meeting, held in November 2010, the International Coral Reef Initiative adopted a recommendation for the Pacific region that encouraged marine research to increase knowledge, inform spatial planning and enhance management decision-making, and encouraged increased information-sharing on climate change and its impacts on coral reefs in the Pacific region.

Article 9.2 provides that the SBSTA shall provide assessments of the state of scientific knowledge relating to climate change and its effects, prepare scientific assessments on the effects of measures taken in the implementation of the Convention and provide advice on promoting development and/or transferring technologies and supporting endogenous capacity-building.

To be effective, communication campaigns should strike a balance between scientific findings on climate change and its effects and the likely ability of the public to understand climate change concepts

Together with other advocates, UN-Women undertook outreach to delegations to secure gender-specific references in other decisions, including on loss and damage, national adaptation plans, the Climate Technology Centre and Network, and the Doha work programme on article 6 of the Convention pertaining to education, training and public awareness of climate change and its effects.

Article 6 of the Convention, which addresses education, training, public awareness, public participation and access to information in relation to climate change and its effects, and international cooperation in these matters, is key in engaging all stakeholders and major groups in the development and implementation of policies relating to climate change.

143. The commitments relating to greenhouse gases laid down in the Protocol should be reviewed at regular intervals to be determined and, if need be, further developed in the light of the ultimate objective enshrined in Article 2 of the Convention, taking into account the best available scientific information and assessments on climate change and its impacts, as well as relevant technical, social and economic information.
