Following decision VIII/33, the Chemicals Branch of the UNEP Division of Technology, Industry and Economics (UNEP Chemicals) and the Secretariat of the Basel Convention have agreed a workplan on the environmentally sound management of mercury waste, as follows:

The Secretariat, in close cooperation with the Chemicals Branch of the United Nations Environment Programme Division of Technology, Industry and Economics, the interim secretariat of the Minamata Convention on Mercury and others, have made a number of efforts to ensure that issues related to chemicals and waste management are integrated into the sustainable development goals.

The Chemicals Branch of the United Nations Environment Programme's Division of Technology, Industry and Economics (UNEP Chemicals) has received communications from a number of developing countries stating that there is a need for specific guidance on the handling of mercury wastes.
1 - تلقى فرع المواد الكيميائية بشعبة التكنولوجيا والصناعة والاقتصاد التابعة لبرنامج الأمم المتحدة للبيئة (وحدة المواد الكيميائية ببرنامج الأمم المتحدة للبيئة)، مراسلات من عدد من البلدان النامية أكدت فيها وجود حاجة إلى توجيهات محددة بشأن مناولة نفايات الزئبق.

Strengthen the capacity of the Chemicals Unit of the UNEP Division of Technology, Industry and Economics to facilitate the implementation of chemicals-related multilateral agreements and initiatives and to assist Governments and civil society in global action for sound chemicals management.
85 - تعزيز قدرة وحدة المواد الكيميائية بشعبة التكنولوجيا والصناعة والاقتصاد ببرنامج الأمم المتحدة للبيئة لتيسير تنفيذ الاتفاقات والمبادرات المتعددة الأطراف المتصلة بالمواد الكيميائية ولمساعدة الحكومات والمجتمع المدني في العمل على الصعيد العالمي من أجل الإدارة السليمة للمواد الكيميائية.

The preparatory meeting was opened at 3.20 p.m. on Monday, 7 October 2013, by Mr. Tim Kasten, Head, Chemicals Branch, Division of Technology, Industry and Economics, on behalf of the Executive Director of UNEP.

5. Requests the [secretariat of the Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management] [Chemicals Branch of the Division of Technology, Industry and Economics of the United Nations Environment Programme], within available resources, to service the global partnership;

Since the adoption of the Strategic Approach in February 2006, the secretariat has been duly established in Geneva within the Chemicals Branch of the UNEP Division of Technology, Industry and Economics.
