14. The safety of United Nations peace-keeping personnel was of utmost importance and Bulgaria noted with appreciation the progress achieved by the Ad Hoc Committee on the Elaboration of an International Convention dealing with the safety and security of United Nations and Associated Personnel.

Mr. MOTSYK (Ukraine) said that, given the relative infrequency with which the Sixth Committee adopted international treaties, the forthcoming adoption of a draft international convention dealing with the safety and security of United Nations and associated personnel was an event of more than ordinary significance.

In connection with the item, the Sixth Committee had before it the following documents: (a) Report of the Ad Hoc Committee on the Elaboration of an International Convention dealing with the safety and security of United Nations and Associated Personnel, established under General Assembly resolution 48/37; Official Records of the General Assembly, Forty-ninth Session, Supplement No. 22 (A/49/22).

They welcomed the successful conclusion of the mandate of the Ad Hoc Committee on the Elaboration of an International Convention dealing with the safety and security of United Nations and Associated Personnel, and urged Member States receiving personnel involved in such activities to take necessary measures, including the conclusion of bilateral agreements between the Member States concerned, to provide legal protection for such personnel.
