At its 4264th meeting, on 25 January, the Council held an open debate whereat Ambassador Chowdhury of Bangladesh formally presented the report, in the presence of the distinguished members of the Panel led by Martin Chungong Ayafor (Cameroon).

Letter dated 23 March (S/2001/268) from the Secretary-General addressed to the President of the Security Council, informing him that, following consultations with the Committee established pursuant to resolution 1343 (2001) and taking into account the requirements of resolution 1343 (2001), he had appointed the members of the Panel of Experts and selected Martin Chungong Ayafor (Cameroon) to chair the Panel.

Mr. Chungong (Inter-Parliamentary Union) welcomed the emphasis placed by several speakers on the importance of democratic governance as one of the necessary elements to restore peace and sustainable development. He regretted, however, that little mention had been made of the institution of parliament -- one of the essential elements of democratic governance.
